What Buying My Engagement Ring Taught Me About Brand Experience

It started with a simple question from my boyfriend—the one I’d secretly been waiting for my whole life:
“Would you want to go try on some engagement rings? You know… just to see what you like?” I didn’t know it at the time, but that moment would remind me exactly why I care so deeply about creating an intentional brand experience—one where every step is guided, thoughtful, and never left to chance.

When a Lack of Systems Derails the Magic

So I did what any mildly-overachieving, aesthetically-inclined woman would do:

  • Walked into a local jewelry store downtown
  • Tried on a few styles
  • Fell in love with the one
  • Got my size measured
  • Had the salesperson write down every detail: style, size, notes, the band thickness in millimeters, and both of our names

I walked out feeling excited. Prepared. Like I’d set him up to win.

But when he went back in?

No one could find the notes.
Not once. Not twice.
Not even the third time he tried.

Eventually, I reached someone who told me:
“Oh! We keep notes in our own notebooks. He needs to come in and speak to that one person you met a month ago.”

Apparently, unless you’re ready to buy, nothing gets entered into their system. No shared notes. No central record. No continuity.

Suddenly, I didn’t feel so prepared anymore.
I felt like I had to start over—for something that was supposed to feel sacred.

This was my one engagement. My one time doing this.
I didn’t know the process—I just wanted to feel guided.
